about this site
Welcome to the virtual home of Alpine Valley School! Our goal here is to give you a taste of who we are and what we do, to whet your appetite for this cutting-edge approach to education.
Here's an overview of the pages that make up this site.
- About Us includes basic facts such as tuition and our calendar, as well as a link to a page on the Sudbury educational philosophy.
- How AVS Works discusses how our philosophy translates into practice, including School Meeting, the Judicial Committee and community-wide activities.
- Life After AVS describes our graduation process and some of the things our alumni have gone on to do.
- Find Out More offers links to both external and internal articles on Sudbury schooling.
You'll also note in the left sidebar of each page suggestions on how to learn more or get involved, as well as a variety of quotes from satisfied parents, students and alumni.
Alpine Valley School has been in continuous operation since September 1997, when eleven students met in the education wing of a Unitarian church in Golden,

Colorado. Two and a half years later, we bought our own property in Wheat Ridge, a 7000-square-foot building just off Interstate 70 between Kipling and Ward Road.
In our thirteen years of existence, over 100 students have passed through our doors, including sixteen graduates. Eighty percent of our staff members have been with us for at least ten years. Staff members have attended regional and international Sudbury conferences in 1996, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2007 and 2008.
